Topic: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence: An Evidence-Based Approach to Help Your Patients Quit

Presenter: Allison Gorrilla, MPH, Southeastern Outreach Specialist from UW-Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention

Date and Time: Thursday, April 6th from Noon-1pm CT

Review the rationale behind tobacco dependence by studying the 2008 Clinical Practice Guideline recommendations for treating tobacco dependence and learn how to properly integrate the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line into routine clinical care.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the rationale for treating tobacco dependence.  Participants will learn the mortality & morbidity rates associated with smoking prevalence and your role in providing treatment.
  2. Explain the 5 A's for patient's willingness to quit smoking and will learn counseling techniques for patients willing to quit.
  3. Use Motivational intervention strategies for patient not willing to quit as well as relapse prevention strategies.
  4. Know and understand tobacco cessation medications.
  5. Properly use the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line services and the Fax to quit program.

This course has been approved by the Professional Education Committee of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation for 1.0 AACVPR Continuing Education Credits.
